Desperate Housecats

2012
04.29

Been dreaming of petting a pussy of your own? Hit up Austin Animal Center’s “Desperate Housecats” event from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. to take home a cuddly kitty for just $35.

Foster cats looking for forever homes will be available on the fourth weekend of each month (that’s today!), in search of reliable human companions to give them the love and attention they deserve. Find your own Henri and share a life of French philosophical jokes and existential ennui:

Adoption costs just $35, and all kitties come with a clean bill of health: they’re spayed/neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccinations—a total savings of $200. If that’s not a crazy cat deal for a crazy cat lady or gent, then I ask you: what is?

C’mon down, cat lovers. Shake your rumps on over to Austin Animal Center and find a feline friend today!

Austin Animal Center is located at 7201 Levander Loop. For more info, call 3-1-1.

4th of July do-gooding!

2011
07.04

While most of us equate the 4th of July with independence, revolution and backyard BBQ-ing, sometimes there’s more to life than bucking the system and eating meat. (Rarely, I’ll admit, but yes it happens.) What’s that, you say? You’ve been looking for a furry friend for your favorite animal pal? Well look no further than the Town Lake Animal Center’s 4th of July $4 adoption day!

For just four bucks, you can take home a fully vaccinated, spayed or neutered (& microchipped!) cat or dog from the Town Lake Animal Center this July 4 only. Between 11:30 AM and 5 PM, all of their “ready to adopt” animals will be tagged with red, white and blue streamers on their kennels. Festive!

Additionally the “Summer of Love” fundraiser and fostering event goes on throughout July and August, seeking to place animals in caring temporary homes, in order to help make Austin a no-kill city in 2011. Plus, if you’ve got time on your hands, TLAC is always looking for volunteers to help out at the shelter, walking dogs, bottle-feeding kittens, and otherwise supporting their hard-working (and dare we say overworked?) staff.

Give a homeless animal a good home: adopt a pet this Independence Day for only $4!

Town Lake Animal Center is located at 1156 West Cesar Chavez.

CATurday! Queenie at Austin Pets Alive!

2011
02.12

A new addition to the Shoestring Austin weekly updates, we’ve virtually teamed up with local animal rescue group Austin Pets Alive! to bring you CATurday, an entire day devoted to cats! But not just any cats; every week we’ll feature a new cat currently available for adoption, to help spread the word about pet rescue, foster homes for abandoned animals, and others ways you can help make Austin a No-Kill city.

If you’ve been thinking of adopting a pet, please consider Austin Pets Alive! to help you find a new friend for life.

To kick off our first CATurday, please check out Queenie‘s profile.

She’s a small black and white shorthair cat with a tendency to be shy around people, but once she gets to know you, she’ll purr like a motorboat. She enjoys cuddling up next to people, playing with laser pointers, and keeping her tuxedo looking fancy with regular grooming sessions.

Born in February 2008, she’s currently in foster care and looking for a forever home. Won’t you make her birthday special this year and adopt this super-cutie?

More info on adoption via Austin Pets Alive!:

All APA! foster kittens/cats are litter box trained, tested for FeLV/FIV, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, treated for worms/fleas, microchipped and come with a 30-day health insurance plan.

If you have additional questions about Queenie or would like to adopt her, please email APA! at adopt@austinpetsalive.org.
