Desperate Housecats

2012
04.29

Been dreaming of petting a pussy of your own? Hit up Austin Animal Center’s “Desperate Housecats” event from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. to take home a cuddly kitty for just $35.

Foster cats looking for forever homes will be available on the fourth weekend of each month (that’s today!), in search of reliable human companions to give them the love and attention they deserve. Find your own Henri and share a life of French philosophical jokes and existential ennui:

Adoption costs just $35, and all kitties come with a clean bill of health: they’re spayed/neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccinations—a total savings of $200. If that’s not a crazy cat deal for a crazy cat lady or gent, then I ask you: what is?

C’mon down, cat lovers. Shake your rumps on over to Austin Animal Center and find a feline friend today!

Austin Animal Center is located at 7201 Levander Loop. For more info, call 3-1-1.

If you’ve been wondering how you can help the Bastrop residents who have recently lost their houses to wildfires, and you’re the type who thinks pie (or cake or cookies) really DOES solve all problems, then look no further! The same group who brought their baking and pastry skills to benefit victims of the Japanese tsunami are back for another round of fundraising with Austin Bakes for Bastrop.

Start your ovens and mark your calendar for the October 1 event! For a delicious way to get involved, and to donate tasty pastries of your own, hit up http://austinbakes.wordpress.com/2011/09/09/austin-bakes-for-bastrop/ for full details.

If you prefer to send monetary donations to the families affected, please check out the Central Texas Wildfire Fund to give generously.

4th of July do-gooding!

2011
07.04

While most of us equate the 4th of July with independence, revolution and backyard BBQ-ing, sometimes there’s more to life than bucking the system and eating meat. (Rarely, I’ll admit, but yes it happens.) What’s that, you say? You’ve been looking for a furry friend for your favorite animal pal? Well look no further than the Town Lake Animal Center’s 4th of July $4 adoption day!

For just four bucks, you can take home a fully vaccinated, spayed or neutered (& microchipped!) cat or dog from the Town Lake Animal Center this July 4 only. Between 11:30 AM and 5 PM, all of their “ready to adopt” animals will be tagged with red, white and blue streamers on their kennels. Festive!

Additionally the “Summer of Love” fundraiser and fostering event goes on throughout July and August, seeking to place animals in caring temporary homes, in order to help make Austin a no-kill city in 2011. Plus, if you’ve got time on your hands, TLAC is always looking for volunteers to help out at the shelter, walking dogs, bottle-feeding kittens, and otherwise supporting their hard-working (and dare we say overworked?) staff.

Give a homeless animal a good home: adopt a pet this Independence Day for only $4!

Town Lake Animal Center is located at 1156 West Cesar Chavez.

CATurday! Queenie at Austin Pets Alive!

2011
02.12

A new addition to the Shoestring Austin weekly updates, we’ve virtually teamed up with local animal rescue group Austin Pets Alive! to bring you CATurday, an entire day devoted to cats! But not just any cats; every week we’ll feature a new cat currently available for adoption, to help spread the word about pet rescue, foster homes for abandoned animals, and others ways you can help make Austin a No-Kill city.

If you’ve been thinking of adopting a pet, please consider Austin Pets Alive! to help you find a new friend for life.

To kick off our first CATurday, please check out Queenie‘s profile.

She’s a small black and white shorthair cat with a tendency to be shy around people, but once she gets to know you, she’ll purr like a motorboat. She enjoys cuddling up next to people, playing with laser pointers, and keeping her tuxedo looking fancy with regular grooming sessions.

Born in February 2008, she’s currently in foster care and looking for a forever home. Won’t you make her birthday special this year and adopt this super-cutie?

More info on adoption via Austin Pets Alive!:

All APA! foster kittens/cats are litter box trained, tested for FeLV/FIV, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, treated for worms/fleas, microchipped and come with a 30-day health insurance plan.

If you have additional questions about Queenie or would like to adopt her, please email APA! at adopt@austinpetsalive.org.

Why we heart EmanciPET and Austin Pets Alive! (Or: A Tale of Two Kitties)

2011
01.08

Surely we’ve all been there: one day you open the door to your apartment to step out for a breath of fresh air, and to your surprise, you find one of these:

She is the cutest, friendliest Little Grey Kitty, and when you pet her and feel some lumps in her belly, you realize she is also a pregnant teen mom kitty! And although you are dying to share your home with the world’s cutest kitty, you also know you cannot afford to take care of her since you are a total broke-ass, and she has more hungry kittens on the way.

So you wish you could do something, but you don’t really know what, cus you can barely feed yourself and keep the bills paid on time, but your heart is breaking over this poor little kitty, who has clearly been abandoned by her horrible owners who didn’t have the brain cells to have her spayed before they let her outside. You feed her a little tuna from your pantry, and you wish there was something else you could do.

BUT WAIT! There is something you can do, and it doesn’t involve the SPCA (as good and helpful as they are), cus you know that if no one adopts her in a few weeks, this little kitty is going to sleep forever and forever.

In Austin, there are some truly awesome pet charities that have been set up as alternatives to the SPCA, in order to one day make ours a NO KILL city. After all, why should innocent animals have to die because their owners didn’t want to take care of them anymore? Why should animals have to be killed because they haven’t found loving, caring homes in a pre-set period of time? Sometimes, you just need more time. And so, the amazing people at Austin Pets Alive! (who saved 3,227 local animals in 2010) offer lots of support for people who find cats and kittens near their homes (click here for info on Found Baby Kittens), and help locate homes for animals who have been abandoned and are set for euthanization.

They also regularly bring their animals to stores like Petco and PetSmart so that they can be adopted, which is so much more awesome than buying a new dog or cat from a puppy or kitten mill. You can find a full list of animals that they’ve got for adoption on their website, or hit up the nearest Petco or PetSmart to see who’s available for adoption there. WE LOVE THIS! It’s so much better to see pet stores working with shelters than contributing to the problem.

Now, if you’ve already adopted a wild kitty, you may have other issues, including fleas, ticks, worms, and the need for low-cost spay and neuter options. Don’t fret: that’s what EmanciPET is for!

EmanciPET regularly offers low-cost spay and neuter operations for dogs and cats in Austin, but guess what? They’re running a Purrfect New Year’s Special from January 17 to 27 for all owned cats to receive FREE surgery, plus rabies vaccinations (a requirement) and a microchip to help track your puppy or kitten in case they are accidentally lost. Dudes, you can even book an appointment online, so there’s no excuses.

PLUS, if you are even more broke than a joke, EmanciPET also offers 100% free spay and neutering through their mobile clinics every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It’s a first-come, first-served thing, but if you’re in dire straits and really want to help control the pet population like Bob Barker used to say, then this is just the ticket!

Abandoned animals don’t have to suffer, thanks to these two kick-ass charities. We love them both, and encourage you to donate your time and your money (and your extra cans of pet food or office supplies; they’ve got wishlists for all kinds of things they need on their sites) to these very worthy causes.

P.S. Although we were unable to adopt Little Grey Kitty, we were ultimately able to give one of her kittens—the irrepressible Nedward Carlos Nedwards (aka Ned), pictured above—a good home. Hooray!

Check out EmanciPET at emancipet.org and Austin Pets Alive! at austinpetsalive.org for more complete information on all their programs or to volunteer and/or donate money. And if you want to adopt a cat, be sure to check out catzjazz.org as well!

Supporting your community: I Live Here, I Give Here

2010
11.04

It’s November, which means the holidays are coming up fast. You’ve undoubtedly already seen the Christmas decorations in the stores, and soon the bell-ringers will be outside shops trying to convince big-spenders to drop a few coins in their pots.

All well and good, but have you ever wondered where those donations—or the ones they’ve always got at your local grocery store, asking for $1 to feed the hungry/support breast cancer research/whatever the charity of the month might be—really end up?

If you live in Austin, wonder no more! The I Live Here, I Give Here campaign helps match Austin residents with charitable organizations that are registered and worthy of their time by using a widget to narrow down your favorite causes and offer suggestions from a wide variety of community-based organizations.

For example, if you love animals and want to help keep the pet population under control, I Live Here, I Give Here can match you up with Austin groups like Austin Pets Alive! (an animal shelter dedicated to making Austin a No Kill city) and EmanciPET (a free and low-cost spay & neuter team), some of Shoestring Austin’s favorite local charities. You can decide from there how to best support your chosen cause, whether with monetary donations, volunteering your time on their behalf, or giving much-needed supplies on the group’s wish list.

In addition to their free matching service, I Live Here, I Give Here also runs the See Jane Give and Give Back Jack programs, which allow women and men to mingle with fellow philanthropists twice a year at dinner events that highlight a local resident’s charitable contributions and involvement. For those looking to step up their personal giving campaigns, this provides plenty of incentive, sharing the stories of fellow Austinites who help keep our city’s charities running with their time and their money.

With monthly spotlights on different community needs (November’s focus is on Seniors’ Services), I Live Here, I Give Here seeks to bring attention to underserved groups with great missions, and helps steer donations to different sectors throughout the calendar year.

Want to get involved? Check out I Live Here, I Give Here‘s giving tools to help figure out what percentage of your annual salary you’d like to donate, and then break it down to a monthly total. Don’t forget to download their free Giving Plan PDF to help organize your donations and focus your giving goals. And remember: you may be living on a shoestring budget, but you can always spare a few bucks for those living on even less.
