Spelling for ebooks: Austin’s annual Adult Spelling Bee

2012
05.09

UPDATE – MAY 11: This event has been postponed until May 17 due to rain!

I must admit I’m torn on this event, as I loathe the Chronicle, but my love for the Austin Public Library far outweighs the many beefs I have with our city’s rag of choice. So, with my blessing, please attend the annual Adult Spelling Bee on Thursday, May 10 to benefit the library’s new digital reading collection!

Deets are as follows:

This is an adults-only spelling bee, so leave the youn’uns at home. 21+ drinking types can get buzzed while the bee does, and maybe learn a thing or two about EDU-MA-CAY-SHUN and VO-CAB-A-LARRY. Study up, bro, these words will be on the test!

WHEN: Thursday, May 10 17

WHERE: Threadgill’s World HQ (aka 301 W. Riverside)

REGISTRATION runs from 4:30 to 6 PM, the first test will take place around 6:15 PM, the second around 7 PM and finals at 7:30 PM

Prizes! Minimal $3 entry fee! Booze! Ebooks for APL! Kick it with 2011 winner Geoff Thevenot! It’s all good and the price is right, so c’mon dowwwwwwwwn!

Why God, ninjas, pirates and James Brown want you to vote

2012
04.30

The City of Austin’s Municipal Elections begin on May 12, but early voting starts TODAY!

Mobile polling places open today, April 30, include:

  • Huston‐Tillotson University – Davage‐Durden Student Union (900 Chicon Street) from 8 a.m. to noon
  • Dailey Middle School (14000 Westall Street) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Popham Elementary School (7014 Elroy Road) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • St. Edwards University – Ragsdale Center (3001 South Congress Avenue) from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

You can also find additional locations for early voting (which runs from April 30 to May 8) on this downloadable PDF from the city.

Now, you may not give a rat’s ass about who’s in charge of the City of Austin, but you should still get the lead out and vote. Why? Here are my top five reasons:

5. “Because I said so. And I am your god, therefore you must do whatever I say, lest I smite thee.” This is a direct quote from Jesus himself. Trust me, y’all, the big JC spoke to me, and he told me he wants your ass in a voting booth.

4. As the immortal James Brown once said, you’ve got to get on the scene like a sex machine. It takes literally five minutes to vote. Hit it and quit it, my friends.

3. If you don’t vote, your right to bitch about the election’s outcomes is actually suspended. I’m pretty sure this is legally enforcible with fines and such, so you don’t want to mess with that nonsense, friend. Bitching about shady politicians is your god-given right… but only if you checked some boxes on a ballot first.

2. The eSlate is some sweet-ass technology. In fact, it’s a lot like your iPad or Kindle Fire. You like technology, don’tcha? Well, hit up your election booth and play with some of the latest and greatest in electronic voting gadgetry!

1. Do you really want to end up in a situation like the incidents portrayed in my book, Rebels of the 512, where ninjas attack the Capitol, pirates blow the city all to hell with a rocket launcher, and the Governor ends up using our Rainy Day Fund for pure evil? I thought not. Grab a copy of my book for complete details, then get out there and vote, you crazy rebels!

Questions? Call 512-238-VOTE (8683) or hit up traviscountyelections.org to clear up any confusion.

Win a holiday party with the Rebeccammendations Dine Out In contest

2011
12.14

While I was thinking of keeping this all to myself, because I love winning prizes (and especially FOOD prizes), I’m getting into the holiday spirit of giving and decided to share.

Rebecca Otis of The Rebeccammendations is running an awesome holiday contest on her blog. The winner gets a party catered by Dine Out In, a local delivery service that brings meals for Austin restaurants straight to your door.

That’s a sweet $250 deal, baby!

TO ENTER:

Hit up Rebecca with the details of a holiday party you’d like to throw between now and January 1, 2012. You’ve gotta invite at least 3 people, or it’s not a party (you know, “two’s company, three’s a crowd…”?). Include any theme, musical selections, decorations and whatnot that will make your event stand out, plus the types of people you’ll invite (friends, family, co-workers, etc.) and what food you’ll serve, along with the date of your party and the address where you’ll host it (unless, of course, it’s at your house, in which case you don’t need to reveal).

Send allllll of that to Rebecca at Rebeccammendations@gmail.com by this Friday, December 16 at 6 PM, along with:

Your First and Last Name, Phone #, City and Zip (+ Twitter handles, blog and website URLs if you have them) and up to 5 sentences explaining why you want to win.

You must also use the subject line “It’s Party Time with Eat Out In!

(Yes, these directions are kind of long. Quit your bitching: That’s what you’ve gotta do to win free food, bro!)

The winner will be announced on Monday, December 19 via email and social media, and Rebecca will post pictures from your shindig on her blog.

BONUS POINTS:

As an extra, added bonus, if you retweet Rebecca’s blog post about the contest (or Like her Facebook post about it) she’s going to donate $100 to the Austin Children’s Shelter. Dude, that’s like FREE MONEY you can donate to a good cause and look like a hero in the process. No-brainer: just do it.

You’ve only got until Friday at 6 PM to knock my super-awesome New Year’s Eve party idea off its pedestal, so get crackin’!

Mobility projects kick-off: Airport Boulevard

2011
09.13

If you live, work or drive on Airport Boulevard on a regular basis, don’t miss your chance to air your grievances and share your vision for the NEW face of this oft-overlooked Austin artery!

Hey, it could be worse: at least Airport's got bike lanes! (photo via AirportBoulevard.com)

Tonight from 5 to 9 PM at Our Lady’s Maronite Catholic Church (1320 East 51st Street), let your city councillors know exactly what you dream of seeing on Airport Boulevard. Join them for a Mobility Kickoff Session (one is from 5 to 6, the other from 8 to 9) where you’ll learn about the Corridor Mobility Study and how you can get involved.

Tons more details online at http://airportboulevard.com and http://www.austinstrategicmobility.com/corridors, so be sure to check out this Open House tonight!

P.S. If you’ve been wondering what on earth there is to eat on Airport Boulevard (and yes, this is actually a fair question, given the area’s general state of disrepair), don’t miss The Food of Airport Boulevard series (in parts 1, 2 and 3) by Mike Sutter over at Fed Man Walking.

Record heat prompts Austin Energy to offer 6-month payment plans

2011
09.02

After we bitched and complained to everyone we got on the phone at Austin Energy, wrote an open letter to the city of Austin, and emailed Austin Energy about the terrible customer service we received from countless reps, the City of Austin has apparently realized that you can’t, in fact, squeeze blood from a turnip. In other words: if you’re behind on your electricity bills, thanks to this summer’s outrageous and relentlessly record-breaking heat, you can now sign up for a 6-month payment plan!

Austin Energy: Not total douchebags

It’s about freaking time. Paying nearly $200 a month just for your current bill (i.e. not factoring in past-due fees), all because you had the audacity to run your air conditioner during the hottest part of the year, is pretty much the opposite of a good time being had by all. My budget certainly wasn’t set up with these kinds of fees in mind, and I bet yours wasn’t either. So this is some very good news indeed, though I suspect many will still find it difficult to meet the payment plan’s fees, since this heat keeps on battering the city with no end in sight.

If you need to set up a 6-month plan, you’ve got until September 28 to do so. According to the Austin Energy’s website, “The offer is available to any customer – regardless of their payment history (customers involved in meter tampering are not eligible).” Sucks to be you, meter tamperers!

For more info on payment assistance when it comes to outrageous energy bills, please see http://www.austinenergy.com/Customer%20Care/Billing/Payment%20Assistance/index.htm or call 512-494-9400. Questions and requests may also be emailed to myaccount@coautilities.com.

Drought forces shutdown of frivolous fountains

2011
08.18

According to an article in today’s Statesman, due to ongoing drought conditions here in Austin, the City will be cracking down on water usage in a few unusual ways. “Stage 2″ water bans will go into effect September 6, and include:

  • No water served at restaurants, unless requested by the customer
  • No outdoor fountains, unless required to keep fish and other sea-creatures alive
  • No washing your sidewalk or driveway
  • No charity car-washes

The $475 ticket for violations should deter most from engaging in these rather absurd water abuses (seriously, fountains tauntingly bubbling in the middle of a drought is just egregious), but we at Shoestring Austin beg the question: who actually washes their sidewalk/driveway? Further, what gets your sidewalk or driveway so dirty that you can’t just sweep it clean?!

To all you water-wasters out there, we say FOR SHAME. We’re looking at you, One Congress Plaza! (Click here for some artsy photos of this water-waste in action down at 111 Congress, via Michael Tuuk Photography.)

Local publisher seeks Austin writers for new anthology

2011
08.02

Attention Austin writers! Black Heart Magazine is currently seeking contributions for their upcoming Austin Writers Anthology. Chosen works will be published in a variety of digital formats (like their awesome new NOIR anthology), and will feature both established and up-and-coming writers on the subject of “Sense of Place in Austin, Texas.”

"Austin Writers" (photo of Philosophers' Rock by Flickr user Tracy Hunter)

Anthology editor and publisher Laura Roberts (who is, indeed, also the author of this blog) is looking for writing about “the Austin you know and love, the Austin that frustrates you, the Austin where you hang out with friends and family, the Austin you most desire to see on the page or aspire to achieve in the real world,” and wants contributors to share their ideas about Austin with the world.

In addition to short fiction, nonfiction and creative nonfiction pieces of up to 1,000 words, poetry is also welcome, as are images, audio and video selections that will be featured on the Black Heart website.

The deadline for submission to this anthology is August 31, 2011, with publication tentatively slated for October 2011.

To submit your work for consideration, please see Black Heart’s Submishmash submissions system page, online at http://blackheartmagazine.submishmash.com/Submit/6436/Account.

Shoestring Austin joins the Austin Food Blogger Alliance

2011
04.14

Hooray! Just a quick update to let y’all know that Shoestring Austin has been accepted into the new Austin Food Blogger Alliance, a group dedicated to transparency and fairness in food blogging—plus support via classes, social events and philanthropy.

If that all sounds like gibberish to you, the gist of it is this: food blogging is awesome, but writing snarky shit about restaurants or their waitstaff (à la certain popular food rating sites that shall remain nameless) is totally uncool. The AFBA has been formed by some of Austin’s most well-known food writers and bloggers, including Addie Broyles of the Austin American-Statesman‘s Relish Austin blog, Natanya Anderson of Fête & Feast, and Rebecca Otis of The Rebeccammendations (among others—click here for the full list of founding members) with the intent of helping to keep food bloggers’ recommendations fair, honest and real—just like they should be.

Of course, it’s not all gloom & doom and seriousness! Perks and privileges of membership include:

  • Invitation to members only events
  • Discounted rates at educational and social events
  • Exposure for your blog through the AFBA website
  • Philanthropy and professional networking opportunities

Pretty sweet, and for only $25 a year.

If you’re a food blogger, you may want to join this new group to get to know some of the ladies and gents in Austin’s food blogging scene. We’re looking forward to meeting all of you at the upcoming events!
