Two locations in Austin at 701 E. Stassney Lane and 12586 Research Boulevard for your dunking pleasure.

In other freebies, enjoy the “Blow-Out Bar” with start-to-finish hair styling at Spruce Aveda Salon from 3 to 6 PM. Add a cut-out of some of the sweet frames from Tortoise & Blonde to your “before” and “after” iPhone shots and you could win a pair of hipster-approved glasses, too!

Once you’re all dolled up, get someplace to go! Tonight is Ladies’ Night at Beauty Bar, with $5 martinis & free manicures starting at 10 PM. “Lonely Man Lonestars” are just $2 for the gents, for equal opportunity drinking.

Yes, it’s a Hallmark “holiday.” Yes, it’s designed to make those of you un-partnered types feel bad about yourselves. Yes, you can stew in your juices hating it…

Frugal Fashion Friday: Because budget clothing doesn’t have to suck

2011
02.04

Fridays are quite the hodgepodge, here at Shoestring Austin. We love freebies, and enjoy highlighting the best of the best here—particularly if they’ve got an Austin connection. But we also know that, sometimes, free just means cheap.

And not in a good way.

So we set out on a fashion experiment, to see if we could locate some free or cheap (in a good way!) clothing and accessories that you fashionistas might actually WANT to incorporate into your wardrobe.

The bad news? It’s hard to find free stuff that doesn’t suck.

The good news? We found some AWESOME stuff that costs more than nothing, but a lot less than the stuff you’ll find at the average fashion blog or on the pages of Vogue. (Oh, and Vogue? If you’re reading this, let’s do a give-away!)

Here’s what we found:

Free Jewelry (Online)

If you like jewelry and change your accessories often, you’ve probably already heard of Silver Jewelry Club—a website that gives away free silver and gemstone jewelry.

Sample scores from Silver Jewelry Club

Yep, free jewelry. How crazy is that?

Okay, so it’s not entirely free, as you do have to pay for shipping ($6.99), but it’s pretty darn close. And the reason they’re giving away free jewelry is to get you interested in their full catalogue, located at Peora.com, which features a wider selection of gemstones and silver jewelry, at correspondingly higher prices.

We also tried a site called FreeJewelry.com, which offered a variety of “celebrity” styles and a lot more selection, whether you’re into beads, bangles, freshwater pearls, turquoise, or even Valentine’s Day jewelry for that special someone (hint hint!). This site orders items in bulk to pass the savings along to you, the consumer, again charging only for shipping (and even using the same fee of $6.99).

We poked around the site and found a great looking jade necklace, which we had delivered straight to our office in about a week we’re still waiting to appear, despite the fact that the USPS tracking number says it’s been delivered. Hmm. (Check back next week; we’ll let you know how it all pans out.)

Frugal Fashions (Around Town)

After our favorite online destination for pretty much everything (i.e. eBay), we asked locals to share some of their Austin secrets.

For those looking to recycle their duds while also purchasing new-to-you items, there are at least two high-quality options in town: Plato’s Closet and Buffalo Exchange.

Both shops will purchase gently-used clothing that’s trendy enough to be re-sold in their boutiques, so you can potentially make a bit of money from the stuff in your closet you don’t wear anymore. That is, if you can resist the temptation to spend it in the store!

THRIFT STORES

For those looking to go even cheaper, or who are looking for more vintage scores, there are LOTS of thrift stores here in Austin. Here’s a short list of the major players to help you find your way:

CONSIGNMENT STORES

Similar to shops like Buffalo Exchange or Plato’s Closet, you can sometimes get a good deal on your used duds by having a consignment store re-sell your gently used clothing for you—although they won’t give you the cash up front. In Austin, here are some consignment shops to check out if you’ve got specialty items you’re looking to buy or sell:

In summary: the answer is YES, ladies and gents, you CAN buy great-looking clothes on a budget. Austin is full of discount and used clothing options, so get out there and scoot your boots ’til you find what suits ya!

P.S. Be sure to check back later today for our red-hot, under $20 Valentine’s Day gift list to find some surefire winners for your lady love!

Obsession: The Perfect Red Pump

2011
01.27

Shoestring readers, let me be perfectly honest with you: Sometimes, I get these weird obsessions. Although I’m not particularly excited by the prospect of leaving the house to go shopping, nor in the rather unglamorous pastime of trying things on, occasionally I do get a bee in my bonnet and just have to have a particular item of clothing. In the past, this obsession has led me to a variety of thrift stores, in and out of the discount hotspots I’m well acquainted with, and even to the dreaded mall.

These days, of course, I always begin by scouring the Internet in the hopes that someone, somewhere will be selling exactly the piece my heart truly desires—and preferably at a reasonable price!

I’m not sure how it happened, but currently I am obsessed with finding

THE PERFECT RED PUMP

You know the ones I’m talking about: the hot red heels of my dreams. The ones that make me feel like a million bucks and make me irresistible to members of the opposite sex. Stylish, sexy and comfortable, too. Satin, leather or vinyl—I’m not picky about the material, but I want it in a suitably bright, brilliant red that can’t avoid drawing attention to my toes.

Maybe I’ve been watching too many old-timey noir flicks, where the dame would be wearing red lipstick if the film were colorized. I’ve been envisioning her shoes, which naturally match those scarlet lips, and I want them.

The problem? I have no idea where to get them. Payless never has much in the way of red shoes, and my old stand-by, Target, while ostensibly a great place to get anything red (hello, their bulls-eye logo?) is letting me down big time. (A note to shoemakers everywhere: glitter applied to the surface does not make your footwear seem particularly appropriate for work, and only marginally more appealing for frivolous evening outings.)

Also, as you may have guessed, I’m looking for an inexpensive pair of these mythologically Perfect Pumps. Let’s say for less than $30, all in (i.e. taxes, shipping, gas to go pick them up, etc).

I’ve found some good sites, in my quest for the Perfect Red Pump—let’s call her Rita, shall we? (You know, in honor of one of the fabulous redheads of the era?) Some possible contenders include:

Colin Stewart round toe red pumps, $8.99 (via eBay)

Mary Jane stacked kitten heel pumps, $19.99 (via eBay)

Sexy Waterproof Strapped Leather Pumps, $0.99 (via eBay)

Damita K Angel07 platform pumps, $18.39 (via Cutesygirl)

Wild Rose Mindy08 pumps, $15.99 (via Cutesygirl)

Funtasma Gogo50 pumps, $21.99 (via Cutesygirl)

Tsubo Eini pumps, $30 (via 6PM)

Vintage red geometric heels, $10 (via Etsy)

1940's heels in cherry red, $20 (via Etsy)

I’m not sure which—if any—of these to choose. Are they really Rita enough? Are they really RED enough? And will they make me feel as pretty as they look, or will they just cut up my heels, give me blisters, and leave me lying in a gutter as they laugh at my foolish shoe lust?!

Hard to say.

In the end, I’m still cruising the Internet, looking for my Perfect Red Pumps. If you’ve got any suggestions, give me a shout on Twitter @shoestringATX, or leave a comment. Help me channel my inner Rita Hayworth, darlings!

UPDATE – FEB 14, 2011:

I bought the Colin Stewart pumps, and they look fabulous!

We don’t care that it’s 35 degrees out!

2011
01.12

By god, we’ve found a hammock, and we’re gonna use it. 35 degree weather (and irate staff of the Four Seasons) be damned!

Photo by Celebrity Intern. Please note the bundling. And fingerless gloves. We are awesome.

P.S. The outdoor pool at the Four Seasons is also unseasonably warm, just FYI. There are plenty of complimentary towels out there too. Just in case you were wondering.

Frugal Fashion: Hand-painted jewelry deals for Xmas

2010
12.16

Mercedes La Rosa is a Canadian artist I had the privilege of meeting when I lived in Montreal. She designs beautiful hand-painted jewelry for her line, bijougraphie, of which I’m a huge fan. I’ve got a pair of her pink and red “Neuromantics” earrings and, frankly, I had a hard time deciding which ones to get because I loved them all!

What does any of that have to do with Shoestring Austin? Why, XMAS DEALS, of course!

If you live anywhere in the U.S. or Canada, Mercedes is offering free shipping until December 20, 2010 to ensure that your holiday orders will arrive on time.

I’m loving her latest offering, the bunched chain Lucky Charm Necklace shown above ($45), and I’m tempted to order the matching Neuromantics with a black tone chain to go with my earrings… but maybe I’ll wait to see if one shows up under the tree with my name on it, first!

Grab one for the frugal fashionista in your life while supplies—and this crazy free shipping deal—last.
