Free fun weekend events for the crafty and the cunning

2012
05.18

If you’re feeling crafty this weekend, there are two—possibly three—events you won’t want to miss:

On both Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20 there’s the Renegade Craft Fair from 11 AM to 7 PM down at the Palmer Events Center. It’s free to get in, but bring plenty of cash as most of the vendors sell homemade and handmade dodads that they’ll be hawking at their booths and you know they don’t take plastic. Support local artists like MAKEatx, Graham Francoise, Book Bound Bindery, Anna Todaro and more.

Also on Saturday, the Lomography Gallery Store is holding a 100% FREE Diana F+ camera workshop. From noon to 2 PM you’ll get a loaner to shoot with and learn from shop manager Lindsay. If you’re broke as a joke, a free workshop feels like fun and education at the same time. “Edutainment,” if you will. The Lomos are at 912 Congress if you haven’t been by yet.

Still more Saturday freebies at the 35th annual O. Henry Pun-Off World Championships! If you like to rhyme without feeling you’ve committed a crime, if you’re a poet and you know it, or if you just can’t help but play with your language, you won’t want to miss this. In addition to full-on punning from noon to 6 PM, there’s also going to be live music, food by the Peached Tortilla, used book sales and a live auction. Slather on your sunscreen, tune up your rib-ticklers and head down to the backyard of the O. Henry Museum (409 E. 5th Street).

Oh, and if you’re looking for one of those helpful things that help you earn more money that you can spend on stuff… y’know, a job? Set aside your Monday to hit up the Austin Career Fair at the Embassy Suites from 11 AM to 2 PM.

Enjoy your weekend, you crafty kids!

Spelling for ebooks: Austin’s annual Adult Spelling Bee

2012
05.09

UPDATE – MAY 11: This event has been postponed until May 17 due to rain!

I must admit I’m torn on this event, as I loathe the Chronicle, but my love for the Austin Public Library far outweighs the many beefs I have with our city’s rag of choice. So, with my blessing, please attend the annual Adult Spelling Bee on Thursday, May 10 to benefit the library’s new digital reading collection!

Deets are as follows:

This is an adults-only spelling bee, so leave the youn’uns at home. 21+ drinking types can get buzzed while the bee does, and maybe learn a thing or two about EDU-MA-CAY-SHUN and VO-CAB-A-LARRY. Study up, bro, these words will be on the test!

WHEN: Thursday, May 10 17

WHERE: Threadgill’s World HQ (aka 301 W. Riverside)

REGISTRATION runs from 4:30 to 6 PM, the first test will take place around 6:15 PM, the second around 7 PM and finals at 7:30 PM

Prizes! Minimal $3 entry fee! Booze! Ebooks for APL! Kick it with 2011 winner Geoff Thevenot! It’s all good and the price is right, so c’mon dowwwwwwwwn!

Austin goes fritos for TACORAMA!

2012
05.05

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, Austin is rocking the taco at its first ever Austin Taco Festival, aka TACORAMA.

The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center is kicking off the week-long praise of tacos, Latin music and film with a free event from noon to 3 p.m. featuring plenty of tacos, refreshments, children’s activities, a taco piñata and live music by Southwest Key Ballet Folklorico, Tejano star AJ Castillo and “Cruisin’ Muzic King” Trampia Guzman. Since it’s a free event, the Capital Area Food Bank is encouraging attendees to bring non-perishable food items for donation, in lieu of entry fees.

Dude, I’m going just for the taco piñata. If there’s anything that classes up the joint, it’s beating the crap out of a papier-mâché likeness of your favorite food. Seriously, it gives you, me and the entire Lone Star State a reason to live, right Pedro?

In addition to all this taco-eating madness, don’t forget to check out “¡Ask A Mexican!” author Gustavo Arellano at BookPeople on Wednesday, May 9 from 7 to 8 p.m. He’ll be reading from his latest book, Taco USA, all about the mighty taco and how it conquered America as our nation’s favorite food.

There’s also the the Cine las Americas film screening on May 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. and the Pachanga Music Festival on May 11 and 12. Quite a week!

The Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center is located at 600 River Street, and BookPeople is located at 603 N. Lamar. For full deets, check out Latinometro.

Why God, ninjas, pirates and James Brown want you to vote

2012
04.30

The City of Austin’s Municipal Elections begin on May 12, but early voting starts TODAY!

Mobile polling places open today, April 30, include:

  • Huston‐Tillotson University – Davage‐Durden Student Union (900 Chicon Street) from 8 a.m. to noon
  • Dailey Middle School (14000 Westall Street) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Popham Elementary School (7014 Elroy Road) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • St. Edwards University – Ragsdale Center (3001 South Congress Avenue) from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

You can also find additional locations for early voting (which runs from April 30 to May 8) on this downloadable PDF from the city.

Now, you may not give a rat’s ass about who’s in charge of the City of Austin, but you should still get the lead out and vote. Why? Here are my top five reasons:

5. “Because I said so. And I am your god, therefore you must do whatever I say, lest I smite thee.” This is a direct quote from Jesus himself. Trust me, y’all, the big JC spoke to me, and he told me he wants your ass in a voting booth.

4. As the immortal James Brown once said, you’ve got to get on the scene like a sex machine. It takes literally five minutes to vote. Hit it and quit it, my friends.

3. If you don’t vote, your right to bitch about the election’s outcomes is actually suspended. I’m pretty sure this is legally enforcible with fines and such, so you don’t want to mess with that nonsense, friend. Bitching about shady politicians is your god-given right… but only if you checked some boxes on a ballot first.

2. The eSlate is some sweet-ass technology. In fact, it’s a lot like your iPad or Kindle Fire. You like technology, don’tcha? Well, hit up your election booth and play with some of the latest and greatest in electronic voting gadgetry!

1. Do you really want to end up in a situation like the incidents portrayed in my book, Rebels of the 512, where ninjas attack the Capitol, pirates blow the city all to hell with a rocket launcher, and the Governor ends up using our Rainy Day Fund for pure evil? I thought not. Grab a copy of my book for complete details, then get out there and vote, you crazy rebels!

Questions? Call 512-238-VOTE (8683) or hit up traviscountyelections.org to clear up any confusion.

Holy Shakespeare’s Birthday!

2012
04.20

Okay, I’m not the world’s biggest Shakespeare fan. In fact, I’m probably every English Literature professor’s nightmare, as I will admit to dodging the Bard’s opus throughout my university career, mostly in the name of saving money (those giant compendiums of his work with the onion-skin pages are PRICEY!). But if you’re looking for an Elizabethan good time this weekend, you’ll have to check this out:

Shakespeare’s 448th Birthday Party at Richard Garriott’s Castle.

Yes, you read that right. Austin’s got its own castle, and it’s owned by game developer Richard Garriott. He’s hosting the party, on the shores of Lake Austin, to support Shakespeare in the Park productions and Austin Shakespeare (the company that produces the free performances).

There’s going to be a fort, a pirate ship, Shakespearean scene performances, live music, scavenger hunts, games, crafts, fencing, bocce ball, food, beverages and birthday cake. YOWZA!

If you just want to make it in time for cake, hit ‘em up at 3:30 p.m.

Tickets for the event are $12 for adults, $7 for children under 12, and free admission for children 2 and under.

Shakespeare’s Birthday Party is happening at 7400 Coldwater Canyon Drive this Saturday, April 21 from noon to 4 p.m. so be there or be a pribbling dread-bolted knave! (P.S. Don’t forget to brush up on your Shakespearean Insult Generator to talk the talk, my cock of the walk.)

Lady Bird Lake by the light of the moon

2012
04.18

Did you know Austin hosts monthly “Latino Moonlight Serenades”?

Yep, the Texas Rowing Center offers monthly rowing excursions on Lady Bird Lake for just $10 per person throughout the summer. You get to hear local musicians play live Latin music AND you get to paddle around in a kayak or canoe with your sweetie by the light of the moon. You can even bring your own food and (non-alcoholic) beverages to make it a full-fledged date night. (Or if you’ve got kids, bring ‘em along for $5 each.)

Here’s a video of the event, to get an idea of what you can expect:

Latino Moonlight Serenades start check-in at 7 p.m. and launch at 7:30 p.m. on these dates (weather permitting):

  • May 4 (Fri)
  • June 1 (Fri)
  • July 1 (Fri)
  • July 29 (Sun)
  • Aug 31 (Fri)
  • Sept 28 (Fri)

For more information, or to register for an upcoming event, call Federico at 512-965-5267 or email him at federico@texasrowingcenter.com. Happy Moonlight Serenading!

Dear Austin: Get a clue

2012
02.25

Dear Austin,

You have no clue. You seriously have no idea the GENIUS that is going on in other cities. I say this as a world traveller, as someone who has formerly lived in such cosmopolitan cities as Chicago, New York and Montreal.

You are clueless. And you’d better get up to speed, lest your reputation as a “world class” city be yanked unceremoniously from under your feet.

"Montreal Nuit Blanche light spheres" (photo by Flickr user John Walker)

It’s February, which in the rest of the world means ICE, SNOW and HORRIBLE WINTER WEATHER. Yeah, sure, we hit a brutal 52 degrees today, and I lit a fire in my fireplace in joy. But my point is this: the rest of the world CELEBRATES their bad weather. Here, we view it as reason to hibernate.

This is an incorrect approach.

Take, for instance, the brilliant concept of Nuit Blanche. A European idea, the “White Night” is a day set aside where normal work hours are extended deep into the night, where museums and other cultural institutions are open 24 hours, allowing normal folks to turn their usual wake-sleep routines upside down and embrace artistic deviance for one day of the year.

Inspired by the 24-hour daylight suffered by our most northern counterparts (i.e. Russians, Norweigians, etc.), the “White Nights” are a chance to invert time, to celebrate oddity, to embrace artistic dalliances, to do things we wouldn’t normally do at the hours we usually cling to Morpheus in dreamland. In Montreal, all the museums are open, there are parties in the street (or in specially constructed domes), ice is sculpted into beautiful forms and slides to toboggan down, the winter Ferris wheel is turning, fireworks are blasting off, and hot (or alcoholic) beverages are kept flowing all night long.

It’s a chance to run wild and free. There’s fine dining, salsa dancing, jazz and blues music in the streets, art shows, circus freaks, and free activities galore. It’s a chance to break out of the workaday habit. It’s a chance to hang out with friends, and embrace the frigid night as only warm-blooded humans can.

Austin: You have no idea. You’ve never been beset with truly cold weather, so you don’t know what it means to celebrate in the midst of the cruellest month. February, the Ice Age. February, the heart-stopper.

You say you’re “weird,” but you have no concept of the truly bizarre. You should learn from your northern brethren, Austin. Where are your cold-month festivities? Where are your parties during this period of northern hibernation? Where are your creative, artistic sensibilities?

SXSW doesn’t count.

Get a fucking clue.

Sincerely,
Laura

Austin homebrews for the holidays

2011
12.31

Ok, I know I said I’d see you next year in my last post, but as this post concerns a holiday gift that I was late in picking up, I’ve got one more before 2012.

Witness: Homebrewed beer.

My lovely employers, Justine and David of WriteByNight, got all their employees a six-pack of homebrewed beer for Xmas (writers + alcohol = FTW, duh!), and since I just picked mine up this afternoon I decided to bust them out to celebrate a) the New Year a bit early and b) the crazy-warm winter weather we’re having today (it’s currently 73; no wonder people get sucked into moving to Austin).

My favorite, by far, was the Russian Imperial Stout. Described on the label as “dark and bold, flavored with cinnamon coffee and vanilla beans,” I would describe this beer as “alcoholic coffee.” I got some of the vanilla, not much of the cinnamon, and a definite taste of the coffee. As my sister’s t-shirt used to say, “Beer: It’s not just for breakfast.”

Also included in the assortment were:

  • Blueberry Cider – which, oddly, didn’t taste at all like cider to me (a shame, as I really dig a good hard cider)
  • Saison – described as “light, sweet and slightly spicy, brewed with orange peel and coriander” (much enjoyed by Celebrity Intern)
  • Oktoberfest – “sweet and malty, classic German style lager”
  • Blonde Ale – also enjoyed by Celebrity Intern for being “clean and light, easy to drink, pairs well with many foods”
  • Chai Amber – “dark amber beer, rich with chai spice” (it certainly smelled and tasted chai-like, but Celebrity Intern said it bothered his stomach)

Here are some snaps:

The source of these magical homebrews remains shrouded in mystery, so if you want to try a little homebrewing as your New Year’s resolution, check out Austin Homebrew Supply over at 9129 Metric Blvd. They’ve got everything you need to brew your own beer or cork your own wine, plus they offer classes on how to do it up right. Dare I say “It’s the gift that keeps on giving”?

I dare.

Win a holiday party with the Rebeccammendations Dine Out In contest

2011
12.14

While I was thinking of keeping this all to myself, because I love winning prizes (and especially FOOD prizes), I’m getting into the holiday spirit of giving and decided to share.

Rebecca Otis of The Rebeccammendations is running an awesome holiday contest on her blog. The winner gets a party catered by Dine Out In, a local delivery service that brings meals for Austin restaurants straight to your door.

That’s a sweet $250 deal, baby!

TO ENTER:

Hit up Rebecca with the details of a holiday party you’d like to throw between now and January 1, 2012. You’ve gotta invite at least 3 people, or it’s not a party (you know, “two’s company, three’s a crowd…”?). Include any theme, musical selections, decorations and whatnot that will make your event stand out, plus the types of people you’ll invite (friends, family, co-workers, etc.) and what food you’ll serve, along with the date of your party and the address where you’ll host it (unless, of course, it’s at your house, in which case you don’t need to reveal).

Send allllll of that to Rebecca at Rebeccammendations@gmail.com by this Friday, December 16 at 6 PM, along with:

Your First and Last Name, Phone #, City and Zip (+ Twitter handles, blog and website URLs if you have them) and up to 5 sentences explaining why you want to win.

You must also use the subject line “It’s Party Time with Eat Out In!

(Yes, these directions are kind of long. Quit your bitching: That’s what you’ve gotta do to win free food, bro!)

The winner will be announced on Monday, December 19 via email and social media, and Rebecca will post pictures from your shindig on her blog.

BONUS POINTS:

As an extra, added bonus, if you retweet Rebecca’s blog post about the contest (or Like her Facebook post about it) she’s going to donate $100 to the Austin Children’s Shelter. Dude, that’s like FREE MONEY you can donate to a good cause and look like a hero in the process. No-brainer: just do it.

You’ve only got until Friday at 6 PM to knock my super-awesome New Year’s Eve party idea off its pedestal, so get crackin’!
