Shoestring Austin knows there are plenty of places where you can read about life in Austin, many of which cater to people leading exclusive, high-end, yuppie fantasy lifestyles with so much disposable income that they never need to ask questions like “Should we pay the rent or eat this week?” Bully for them, but we ain’t them.

We’re the peeps who have to make the tough decisions, who struggle to pay the bills in rough times, and who always want to know What is there to eat? and How can I get it cheaper?

While we may not be students anymore, we continue to fully sympathize with the concept of the “student” lifestyle, aka the “shoestring budget,” hence the name of our site. So while we may live on limited means, with only enough cash to eat out once or twice a month at most, we don’t believe this has to mean compromising our tastebuds — or our ethics.

We don’t do cheap food that tastes terrible, and even though we may not have a lot of money to do so, we strongly believe that eating locally is the best thing we can do for the environment and for our bodies. We believe in the “slow food” movement, in bringing more fresh foods to the table, and in supporting local farmers whenever possible.

Whether we’re dining out or dining in, this is our only credo: Cheap eats that taste great. Wherever you can find ‘em, there we are.

In short: Shoestring Austin is dedicated to uncovering Austin’s best cheap restaurants, hunting down great recipes to try at home, and having loads of fun on the cheap — because living on a budget doesn’t have to suck.
