Steals and Deals: The $30 microwave

2010
11.30

Having recently moved into a new apartment that—shock, horror!—does NOT have a microwave included in the kitchen setup, I’ve been fiending hardcore. It sounds silly, because I never cook anything in my microwaves, and really only use it for the most basic purpose of reheating food, but when you don’t have access to that 30-second zap for your coffee that’s gone cold, you really start to appreciate how handy the darn thing is.

Thus began my quest to find a new microwave for less than $100.

Being a frugal sort, I was sure I had paid around $30 for a microwave, somewhere in my not-so-distant past. I clicked around online trying to figure out where one might procure such an inexpensive specimen, with little luck. Target’s cheapest item was a Sunbeam, which I deemed still too expensive at $49.99. Fifty bucks for 0.7 cubic feet of cooking space? That seems a bit overpriced, based on size alone, don’t you think?

I was sure I could do better, and clicked over to WalMart.com. Shockingly, their cheapest version was an off-brand I wasn’t familiar with called Haier, similarly small at 0.7 cubic feet. Seriously? This was the best my go-to discount stores could do?

I was beginning to lose hope, when I randomly thought to check BestBuy.com. And there it was: my $30 microwave! Well, $29.99, to be exact. Same size as the others, a recognizable brand—Oster—and I could even check nearby stores to make sure it was in stock before wasting money on gas. Brilliant! I found one in South Austin, motored over and had a friendly sales dude grab it off a high shelf for me, no problemo.

If you’re in the market for a new or replacement microwave, at only 30 bucks you really can’t beat this deal. You can throw in a 2-year protection plan for $20, if you think it’ll help prevent you from having to buy another $30 microwave a year later, too, although personally I’d skip it. (Consumer Reports says the “extra protection” these extended warranties claim to offer aren’t really worth the price.)

A $30 microwave; I knew it was out there, if only I could find it. Thank Al Gore for inventing the Internet!

Corn and Black Bean Salsa

2010

by Emily Ramsey

You can eat salsa with just about anything—except for maybe chocolate cake. Spread it on top of bread, combine it with chips, mix it with scrambled eggs, eat it alone, use it as salad dressing… you get my point. Let your imagination be uninhibited, and the options are endless.

I dare to foresee some entertaining in your near future, thanks to the upcoming holidays. And a gathering isn’t complete without some fresh, homemade salsa. Make sure you have the best for your hungry guests, complete with veggies and flat bread for dipping, as opposed to the tired potato or corn chips.

Supporting your community: I Live Here, I Give Here

2010
11.04

It’s November, which means the holidays are coming up fast. You’ve undoubtedly already seen the Christmas decorations in the stores, and soon the bell-ringers will be outside shops trying to convince big-spenders to drop a few coins in their pots.

All well and good, but have you ever wondered where those donations—or the ones they’ve always got at your local grocery store, asking for $1 to feed the hungry/support breast cancer research/whatever the charity of the month might be—really end up?

If you live in Austin, wonder no more! The I Live Here, I Give Here campaign helps match Austin residents with charitable organizations that are registered and worthy of their time by using a widget to narrow down your favorite causes and offer suggestions from a wide variety of community-based organizations.

For example, if you love animals and want to help keep the pet population under control, I Live Here, I Give Here can match you up with Austin groups like Austin Pets Alive! (an animal shelter dedicated to making Austin a No Kill city) and EmanciPET (a free and low-cost spay & neuter team), some of Shoestring Austin’s favorite local charities. You can decide from there how to best support your chosen cause, whether with monetary donations, volunteering your time on their behalf, or giving much-needed supplies on the group’s wish list.

In addition to their free matching service, I Live Here, I Give Here also runs the See Jane Give and Give Back Jack programs, which allow women and men to mingle with fellow philanthropists twice a year at dinner events that highlight a local resident’s charitable contributions and involvement. For those looking to step up their personal giving campaigns, this provides plenty of incentive, sharing the stories of fellow Austinites who help keep our city’s charities running with their time and their money.

With monthly spotlights on different community needs (November’s focus is on Seniors’ Services), I Live Here, I Give Here seeks to bring attention to underserved groups with great missions, and helps steer donations to different sectors throughout the calendar year.

Want to get involved? Check out I Live Here, I Give Here‘s giving tools to help figure out what percentage of your annual salary you’d like to donate, and then break it down to a monthly total. Don’t forget to download their free Giving Plan PDF to help organize your donations and focus your giving goals. And remember: you may be living on a shoestring budget, but you can always spare a few bucks for those living on even less.

La Tapatia

2010
11.03

After the closure of our beloved A La Carrera, Celebrity Intern and I were mooning about, wishing we could reunite ourselves with their delicious, cheap, oh-so-close-by breakfast taco-y goodness. Our stomachs were empty, our kitchen was bare. Whatever would we do to fill our growling bellies?

A flash of inspiration! I spotted the yellow paper where Foodie Banker’s original recommendations were listed, and summoned the powers of Authentic Mexican to discover…

… a place on the list we hadn’t yet visited!!

And thus we got into the truck and zoomed up north for a little action from La Tapatia (13450 Research Blvd).

The Yelp reviews were good, Foodie Banker’s other suggestions had all been solid, and so we approached La Tapatia with high hopes. Could this be our new breakfast taco fave?

photo via Yelp reviewer Kantiki J.

An unassuming little taqueria, La Tapatia is definitely a casual joint. We immediately liked their laid-back atmosphere, with beer posters and signs everywhere, bamboo shades blocking out the harsh glare of the morning sun, and plenty of Mexicans working in the kitchen and enjoying the cheap eats.

Perusing the menu, we discovered the Foodie Banker had been right about the cheapness of the place: you could actually get 3 breakfast tacos for a mere $3! Since we’re actually more into regular tacos for breakfast (as opposed to the egg/bean/potato mixes most people think of as breakfast tacos), Celebrity Intern ordered one a piece from the slightly pricier (but still exceedingly inexpeez) taco menu, choosing one beef fajita, one chicken and one beef barbacoa. I went the breakfastier route and selected the migas, which I’d never tried before but always heard good things about, around Austin.

Celebrity Intern inhaled his tacos, moaning with ecstasy, and so we have no pictures, unfortunately.

As for my plate, my eyes nearly popped out of my head when I saw the giant size of my migas platter, particularly since the whole thing only cost $3.50. Piles of potatoes, refried beans, and an enormous omelette with everything but the kitchen sink thrown in, and plenty of salsa to top it all off right. It reminded me of the “mishmash” dish I occasionally ordered at a greasy spoon in Montreal, and I wondered how I’d manage to eat it all.

I ended up eating about 1/3 of the delicious creation, and got the rest to go. I was able to stretch one meal out for the entire day, since they provided tacos as well. You could definitely share this plate with a friend… or two!

We’ve been back to La Tapatia to sample more of their tasty tacos (I enjoyed the thick pieces of steak in their carne guisada, and Celebrity Intern is still salivating for more of their chicken tacos), and would highly recommend them to anyone with a hankering for some real Mexican in North Austin.

A La Carrera may be dead and gone, but La Tapatia lives on and has taken up the mantle of Best Breakfast Tacos. ¡Viva la revolución!
