Recipe Roundup: A few of our favorite cooking apps and websites

2010
09.26

We here at Shoestring Austin love finding new recipes, and cookbooks are a major source of inspiration and joy when we’re out cruising the bookstores. Of course, being Frugal Foodies, we don’t always feel like spending $25 (or much, much more!) when we find a book we love.

What’s a recipe hound to do? Hit the Internet and find it for free!

Here are some of our favorite cooking sites and inexpensive (or free) apps you can download for a great recipe in a hurry.

Mark Bittman’s How to Cook Everything On the Go app

As previously mentioned on this blog, we love Mark Bittman and his minimalist approach to cooking. With all the right ingredients, you can easily whip up something mind-bogglingly good, sometimes with only 3 to 5 ingredients. If you’re looking for a great way to get acquainted with his methods, check out his iPhone app, How to Cook Everything On the Go, for just $4.99.

To get acquainted with Bittman for free, subscribe to his Minimalist podcasts through iTunes and enjoy watching the man in action with new recipes by video once a week.

Jamie Oliver’s 20 Minute Meals

Jamie Oliver’s iPod app 20 Minute Meals is also highly recommended. While his recipes aren’t quite as simple as Bittman’s (“20 Minute Meals” occasionally coming off as a misnomer when you factor in longer prep times for all the chopping his recipes involve), we’ll forgive him this minor flaw. Probably because he’s the Naked Chef and we just want to pinch his cheeks!

In any case, Jamie Oliver’s noble quest to bring you a hot, fast, healthy dinner in 20 minutes (along with his Food Revolution, replacing burgers and fries in school cafeterias with actual nutrition) earns him high praise from the Shoestring blog.

Plus, the “grocery list” function on this app is, as Jamie might put it, BRILLIANT.

This app is just $7.99 and well worth the price.

AllRecipes Dinner Spinner

If you want a fun, free app to shake up your tired routines, check out AllRecipes.com’s Dinner Spinner. Offering a selection of the website’s most popular recipes, you can spin your dish type, ingredients and amount of time you’d like it to be ready in to sort out your choices.

For $2.99 you can go Pro and get all of the site’s recipes, plus a variety of bonus features like the ability to transfer recipes wirelessly using Bluetooth and access to your personal Recipe Box.

Epicurious.com

Call us old-fashioned, but we like the Epicurious website more than their Epi iPhone app. It’s free, which is nice, but it’s not quite as functional as some of the other apps out there. Plus, users have complained that it doesn’t sync with your online recipe box, which is a bummer. (And since AllRecipes.com will do this for $2.99, you might as well use theirs!)

Still, the Epicurious website does have a lot of great recipes, and they divide them up in ways we adore. The Seasonal Cooking section varies recipes depending on Mother Nature’s availability, so you can feel good about buying products that will be less expensive and earth-friendly if they’re grown locally. International Cooking brings global variety to your dishes (and is sortable by country), while the Holidays & Celebrations breakdown offers menus based on traditional holiday dishes for everything from Bastille Day to Weddings.

Be sure to check out their Dinner Rush recipes with quick menus, including hits like the Tequila Shrimp shown above—not to mention fabulous wine pairings—for every night of the week!

Freebie Friday: Free beer, free yoga, free CA$H!

2010
09.24

Central Market‘s holding a bunch of beer-related freebies this weekend for their Brewtopia event, so be sure to hit them up for some tastings. Friday features Sierra Nevada Brewmaster samplings from 4 to 6 pm, Saturday features a Breckenridge demo from 11 to 2 pm, and Sunday serves up a Breckenridge Brewmaster sampling from 12 to 3 pm. Mosey on down to the Lamar location for hoppy goodness while supplies last!

If you’re closer to the Westgate store, never fear! Magic Hat’s doing a beer sampling on Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm, so hit one or both for all the free beer you can slosh down your gullet. Plus the fun rolls on into next week with a Pyramid sampling with master brewer Tom Bleigh on Thursday September 30 from 4 to 7 pm, plus a sampling with the Brewmaster of Ommegang from Cooperstown, New York on Friday October 1 from 4 to 7 pm. Cap the weekend off right with New Belgium’s Brewmaster and “Sensory Specialist”‘s sampling on Saturday October 2 from 4 to 7 pm.

Now that’s what we call giving good head.

Ruta Maya Community Wellness Classes

If boozing isn’t your thing, but freeing your mind and/or healing your body is, then check out Ruta Maya’s free Community Wellness Classes. Whether you’re looking for some inexpensive tutoring or want to try out a tai chi class, you can catch up with Austin community teachers who are willing to share their knowledge on the cheap at this Best In Austin café, located at 3601 South Congress.

Ruta Maya (photo via Apartment Therapy)

Currently on offer at the coffee shop are Informal Classes with Professor George Doig in Medical Terminology, Latin Tutorial and English Word Power, as well as Tai Chi with Guy Forsyth. Professor Doig is offering classes on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 3pm, and you have to RVSP at 567-6298 so he’ll know which books to bring; Guy Forsyth’s Tai Chi classes happen on Tuesdays at 1 pm, and they’re sponsored by the Musicians Health Alliance.

In addition to these free classes, there are daily free (with purchase from the café) yoga classes each morning, inexpensive salsa lessons, Spanish classes for all levels, B-Boy training and guitar lessons from Austin area experts in their fields. Can’t beat that for the price of a cuppa joe!

Be sure to check out Ruta Maya’s full calendar of events, including open mic nights and live music, to make sure you won’t miss a thing!

Fabulous Kiplinger-approved freebies

On top of our fabulous Austin-based freebies, we were also surprised to find an excellent article from Kiplinger.com called Fabulous Freebies with a TON of freebies you probably didn’t already know about. Our favorite? BondRewards, a site that encourages you to spend the money you need to while also SAVING money.

Here’s how it works: Charge your online orders through BondRewards and you’ll accrue BondDollars (no, not the bucks James Bond gets from the guv to bet against the baddies in Casino Royal, but close!), which can be exchanged for U.S. Savings Bonds or cash. For example, $50 in BondDollars can be exchanged for a $50 savings bond or $25 cash. It’s a great way to save your money and show you patriotic side, and whether you choose the quick cash now or the double-your-money later, either makes a great alternative to the spending that nets you nothing.

So there you have it: free beer, free yoga and free money. What more could a freegan ask for?

Freebie Friday Flicks

2010
09.18

We’re a day late with our Freebie Friday post, but we promise we’re TOTALLY making up for it with this Super Saturday sizzler!

In response to our new Freebie Fridays post, I received a bit of intelligence in my inbox from Bill Elsey down at Duchman Family Winery in Driftwood, Texas. Bill informs me that every year the winery hosts a “Movies in the Vineyard” free summer film series, which I’ve been missing out on! But never fear: they’ve got one more golden film classic coming up on September 24. Fellini’s 1960 film La Dolce Vita will be on-screen, a nod to their Italian grapes, and Duchman wines will be served (with cheese, of course) to film-goers. How awesome is that?

If you’ve got transportation, it’s about a 45 minute drive from Austin down to Driftwood (click here for directions), and the film starts at 8:30 pm. Don’t forget to bring your own blankets or folding chairs (and maybe a little mosquito repellent!), as the movie will be shown under the stars, and keep in mind that no pets or outside food and drink will be allowed.

For more info on Duchman Family Winery, check out their site at duchmanfamilywinery.com.

See you there!

More free movies

Attention cinephiles! Want more free movie nights? Here’s a brief list of some regulars you’ll definitely want to look into.

  • Anime at the Alamo (Tuesdays at 10 pm)
  • There’s still a few more Movies in the Park this season, courtesy of the Alamo Roadshow, including Pee Wee’s Big Adventure on September 29 and Poltergeist on October 14
  • And for those on bikes or pedi-cabbing it, there’s the Starving Art Mini Drive-In! (free for the bikers and walk-ups, $10 for those in vehicles; advance registration for cars required)

Got any free flicks we missed? Let us know; we’d be glad to post your event in next Friday’s list!

UT’s Informal Classes are back!

2010
09.16

After the kerfuffle at the end of the 2009-2010 schoolyear, where the UT Austin threatened to shut down both the popular music venue Cactus Café and the school’s popular continuing educational classes, known as Informal Classes, we’ve got some great news:

Informal Classes are back!

While the program has been significantly scaled back in size, and you’ll no longer be receiving a huge program of course offerings in the mail, they’re back online under the Continuing and Innovative Education portion of the UT website (which you can access here). Registration officially opened September 9, 2010, and the first classes will begin September 27. The newly redesigned website shows offerings under the headings:

  • Active Life (including everything from local walking tours to golf and horseback riding instruction),
  • Business and Personal Life (grant writing and private investigation courses),
  • Creative Life (writing and visual art classes),
  • Exercise and Dance (kung fu!),
  • Language, Culture and Travel (currently only Italian is being offered here), and
  • UT Odyssey (a special series of courses with UT professors and local scholars)

We’re pretty psyched about the return of Informal Classes, especially as they appeal to our thrifty need for continuing education. Sure, you can check out a book on grant writing from the library for free, but why not take a class with an expert for just $48? You can pick instructor Eileen “Ike” West‘s brain in person before, during or after class in addition to learning from her years of experience.

Now that’s a cheap date!

Frugality, meet health: Organic and locally sourced recipes on a budget

2010
09.15

Emily Ramsey is Shoestring Austin’s newest contributor. She’s got some great recipes she plans to share, to balance out our sometimes decadent lifestyle and help you stay healthy on a budget—without sucking. Bon appétit!

As Americans, we are all too aware of our country’s love affair with mammoth food portions and a disregard for nutrition, both of which easily place us near the bottom of the “world’s healthiest” lists.

Approximately 27 percent of Americans are obese. Honestly, I was expecting that percentage to be much higher, but, once I pulled out my calculator and did the math, I found that 27 percent of America’s population—300 million—is 81 million.

81 million Americans are “abnormally or excessively fat,” as defined by the World Health Organization.

That’s a lot of people.

This is not a figure I can hear without losing my appetite, nor without reflecting on my own health and how desperately I do not want to become part of that number.

Now, I know that’s not why you’re reading this. You didn’t come here to read about health; you came to read about frugality. But I’m here to tell you that you can eat cheap and healthy.

“Not possible,” you say?

Well, my mission is to prove otherwise. Starting now!

My recipe for this month fits perfectly with that “farewell to summer” dinner party that we’re all planning. Or, perhaps you’re not the party type. Maybe instead you’re more into an evening consisting of the back patio, a mojito, your dog and a sunset. Either way, this dish will deliver.

Many of the ingredients listed below can be currently found at Austin farmers markets, meaning they’re being locally and organically grown right now.

And, if you endeavor to prove me wrong and scour a farmers market next weekend and don’t find these items, feel free to experiment, buy what you can find and use that instead! It may even one-up this recipe—that is, unless we’re talkin’ eggplant. I’m still stumped as to how to make a good dish out of that darn purple plant. (Feel free to leave a comment if you’ve found a way.)

Sautéed Vegetables with Barley, Basil and Feta

The prep time is quick: only 15-25 minutes (varies according to agility). Makes 4-5 servings (that number will also vary, depending on your guests’ appetites).

Ingredients:

  • 1 c. barley (barley expands in water, so this amount won’t appear small for long!)
  • 2 ½ T. lime juice
  • 1 ½ T. honey
  • 4 garlic cloves (a food processor would come in super handy here)
  • ¾ tsp. ground pepper
  • ¼ tsp. chili powder
  • ½ c. extra-virgin olive oil
  • ½ c. organic vinegar
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 1 green bell pepper
  • 12 whole mushrooms (this may look like a whole lotta ‘shrooms but don’t worry, they shrink when cooked)
  • 2 medium-size carrots
  • 3 ripe tomatoes
  • 3 purple potatoes
  • 3 T. chopped basil (use fresh, if you’re up for a small amount of extra chopping)
  • ½ c. crumbled feta

Directions:

  1. Bring a large pot of water to boil. Sprinkle some salt in for flavor. Then add barley and boil until tender but slightly chewy—this will take 45 minutes to an hour. Take this window of opportunity to prepare your other ingredients—and maybe do some laundry.
  2. Bring a second pot of water to boil. This one will house the potatoes and carrots. Cover and keep a rolling boil until they meet desired tenderness. Most likely, they will take as long as the barley.
  3. In a bowl, combine lime juice, honey, garlic, a dash of salt, black pepper, chili powder, vinegar and olive oil. Taste and add more as your palate desires.
  4. Cover tomatoes, bell peppers and mushrooms with the dressing. Leave 1/3 of the dressing for the finished barley.
  5. Next, sauté veggies in a pan on medium heat. Turn over regularly to attain an even cooking.
  6. When the barley is done, toss it with 1 tablespoon of basil and the reserved dressing. Add veggies on top of the barley and sprinkle with feta and remaining basil.
  7. Eat, and savor the delicious goodness that came straight from the ground!

As a final note: I repeat, this recipe is not a recipe to end all recipes. If you need to add additional spices or a buttery potato on the side to make it fanciful to your taste buds, go ahead! That’s your call. You can follow my nudgings and make it the healthy way, or you can take the dirty route and rebel.

Just remember: the simpler the ingredients, the cheaper—and more nutritional—the dish.

Here’s to a happy, and healthy, tummy!
