I, too, love The Frugal Gourmet's books and recipes. I was a big fan of his long-running PBS shows and have every single one of his cookbooks. When he appeared at a local Dallas, Texas, J.C. Penny store some years ago (they were dipping their toe into marketing celebrities back then), I got Jeff Smith to autograph my entire collection of his cookbooks.

Then tragedy struck. The married protestant minister with children who loved to cook was accused by a gaggle of male student-cooks of engaging in sex with them. (Sounds strangely familiar to the current plight of "Bishop" Eddie (Sch)long in Atlanta! But at least Jeff Smith never was a hypocrite about it, having never spoken out on the "evils" of homosexuality while participating in it.)

Thus ended the career of one of America's first and best television cooks. He settled the lawsuits and died shortly thereafter. R.I.P., Jeff.
